We even added the annual cost of living for a couple using the Economic Policy Institute’s Family Budget Calculator and household income from the U.S. Census Bureau.

Everyone knows the New York City area is an expensive place, but new data shows just how much: Seven of the top 10 highest cost-of-living counties are in downstate. Only three counties in and around San Francisco are more expensive, according to a report this month by the Economic Policy Institute. Nassau, Manhattan and Suffolk counties ranked fourth through sixth, followed by Putnam, Rockland and Queens. Westchester ranked 10. (whole story)

A new report from the Economic Policy Institute puts the cost of living for a family of four in Livingston County at $7,600 per month, or more than $91,000 a year. The report, which takes into account costs like housing, food and childcare, shows the cost of living in each of the country’s 3,171 counties and 611 metro areas and is intended to show the income a family needs in order to attain a “modest yet adequate standard of living.” (whole story)

The cost of living calculation allows $1,893 a month for rent, $1,074 for food, and $1,548 for child care. It also sets aside $1,197 a month for “other necessities.” (whole story)

The Economic Policy Institute’s latest Family Budget Calculator (https://www.epi.org/resources/budget/) shows that a family of two adults and two children in L.A. County need to earn $7,691 a month, or $92,295 a year, to meet all of its living expenses — $1,663 a month for housing, $830 for food, $1,223 for child care, $1,159 for transportation, $795 for health care, $1,006 for other necessities and $1,016 for taxes. By comparison, the calculator estimates the same family needs only $6,100 a month, or $73,204 a year in Bakersfield — $904 a month for housing, $736 for food, $971 for child care, $1,274 for transportation, $926 for health care, $662 for other necessities and $627 for taxes.

The Boston Metro area, including Cambridge and Quincy, is one of the priciest places to live in Massachusetts and, actually, was on the high end in the country, according to the Economic Policy Institute. The organization recently released its 2018 family budget calculator that estimates how costly it is to live in each of America’s 3,142 counties and 611 metro areas.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, San Francisco ranked first in the nation as the most expensive metro area with a basic budget of $148,439 a year for a two-parent, two-child household. On the flipside, that same household would only need to earn $58,906 to live comfortably in Brownsville, Texas, the least expensive metro area in the country. (whole story)
