News from EPI Experts to discuss new analysis of proposals to raise the minimum wage in Washington, D.C.

On Wednesday, May 4th at 11:00 a.m. Eastern, the Economic Policy Institute will hold a press call to discuss a new report analyzing Initiative 76, which seeks to raise the minimum wage in Washington, D.C. to $15 an hour by 2020. Laura Huizar from the National Employment Law Project (NELP) will discuss how proposals to raise the minimum wage in the District compare to efforts throughout the country, and advocates for the measure will discuss the ballot initiative campaign.

EPI economic analyst David Cooper will outline his analysis of the demographic characteristics of the working people who would benefit from an increase to a $15 minimum wage in the District. Cooper will also discuss the racial and gender inequities associated with the District’s separate tipped minimum wage, which would be eliminated under Initiative 76. Importantly, a similar proposal put forth by D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser would keep the tipped minimum wage in place—raising it only to half of the regular minimum wage.
