Some 8.2 million workers who would have gained OT protection under Obama were left behind by the Trump rule, Heidi Shierholz of the pro-labor Economic Policy Institute calculated. They would be deprived of a combined $1.4 billion in pay annually.
The 8.2 million workers left behind, Shierholz estimated, included “4.2 million women, 3.0 million people of color, 4.7 million workers without a college degree, and 2.7 million parents of children under the age of 18.”

Monique Morrissey, a senior economist at the left-leaning Economic Policy Institute, said that while more ambitious proposals to reform long-term care haven’t passed, the Biden-Harris administration has still made a dent in other pressing issues.
“In a much more limited way, they have done a lot,” Morrissey said, pointing to the administration’s success in lowering prescription drug costs. “There are some things that they’ve sort of been patching when they can, when they can get Republicans to go along with it, but there are other big gaps in our patchwork system that still need to be addressed.”

The number of bus drivers decreased by 15% between September 2019 and September 2023, according to the Economic Policy Institute.

The Economic Policy Institute, a left-leaning D.C. think tank, released a report last week on teacher wage penalties across the U.S. On average, teachers get paid about 27% less than similar college graduates in other professions, the study found.
That penalty is growing as teacher pay stagnates. Back in 1993, for instance, teachers were paid just 5% less than their similarly educated peers.
Minnesota’s penalty is 31%, the sixth highest in the nation. That number provides some heft to union arguments that disproportionately low pay is one of the reasons Minnesota student achievement is lagging behind other states in recent years.
