This isn’t just cool for its fairytale quality. In August, a study performed by the Economic Policy Institute (EPI) found that CEO compensation has grown a staggering 940 percent since 1978. Over that same time, typical worker compensation has only risen 12 percent. That sort of exorbitant CEO pay contributes to the ever-increasing disparity between the proverbial “haves” and “have-nots.” Per EPI, CEOs make more due to their power to set pay, not necessarily due to increasing productivity or high-demand skills.

Employers are increasingly preventing employees from forming unions in the workplace, according to a new report from the Economic Policy Institute (EPI), a left-leaning think tank. What’s more, the report finds, many of these efforts are illegal. Employers were found with violating federal law in roughly 42% of all union election campaigns, with 20% involving a charge that a worker was “illegally fired” for union activity. But these numbers only represent elections supervised by the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB).

I remember reading an Economic Policy Institute study in 2012 on public spending, showing 15-45% upward estimates on private sector productivity with the average of 30% being widely accepted. It also shows that Public Capital produces a greater return than Private Capital. This study also showed that much of this U.S. financing could be self-financing, all positive for markets.

The federal minimum wage was worth nearly 15 percent less in 2018 inflation adjusted dollars than it was in 2009 when it was increased from $6.55 per hour. It reached its peak value in 1968. The minimum wage in 1968 is the equivalent of $10.15 per hour in 2018 dollars. The Economic Policy Institute estimated in a February 2019 report that raising the federal minimum wage to $15 per hour by 2024 would directly lift the wages of 28.1 million workers and indirectly lift wages for 39.7 million workers, 26.6 percent of the wage-earning workforce.

“Trade and investment deals are the problem, not the solution,” said economist Robert Scott of the Economic Policy Institute. “The single largest cause of job losses and trade imbalances lies in the currency area. Realigning the dollar is the best thing we could do.”

“A survey of hundreds of hiring managers around the country shows that between 28 percent and 47 percent of the 129 million member private-sector workforce – about 36 million to 60 million workers – have signed these controversial agreements, which stop workers from joining or launching competitors for a time after leaving their jobs, the Economic Policy Institute said.”
