A recent study by the Economic Policy Institute examined day care centers — not home-based day care. The average annual cost for a Minnesota infant was $16,087, and $12,252 for a 4-year-old.

Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., wants to put a stop to such financial robbery of workers for profit. So Garcia, now a member of a financial reform group, joined unions – notably The NewsGuild — workers and the Economic Policy Institute (EPI) in lining up behind Warren’s legislation, the Stop Wall Street Looting Act, to do so.
Warren’s measure would protect some 5.8 million workers whose 35,000 firms are now owned or controlled by private equity funds, EPI President Thea Lee said in her think tank’s detailed analysis of the rapacious investors. That doesn’t count Toys ”R” Us, now dead thanks to the funds’ avarice.

Today, Japan continues to be accused of manipulating its currency in order to give its automakers an unfair advantage, both in its own market and around the world. The Ford Focus, for example, was the world’s best-selling compact car in 2013, with 1.1 million sold. Only 800 were sold in Japan. The Economic Policy Institute estimated that nearly 900,000 jobs were lost in 2013 alone because of the U.S. trade deficit with Japan, which is fueled by Japanese currency manipulation.

Fewer people today maintain a pension fund as evidenced by Economic Policy Institute data. In the 1990s, around 35% of privately employed workers had one compared to 18% today. This trend happens amid an increasing number of gray divorces among couples who are in their senior years. Since New Mexico is a community property state, the law generally requires a 50/50 split of the fund.

The pay might sound generous, but it’s intended to provide drivers with $15 an hour to cover the costs of operating their cars and another $15 in take-home pay. Itzcalli says that drivers have to cover the cost of gas, frequent oil changes and other maintenance because they’re driving so many miles, and extra insurance because standard car insurance doesn’t cover ride-hail drivers (Lyft says drivers are covered by the company when they are in driver mode). Many drivers have to work a week and a half just to cover the basic operating expenses of driving. A recent study from the Economic Policy Institute found that the average hourly wage for Uber drivers was just $11.77. The union’s own surveys suggest it’s actually closer to $8-9 an hour in the area.
