Note: Income rankings based on the normal income distribution of of all families, not only those in specified age range. Normal income categories, not available for 1989 and 1992, may differ from actual income categories if a family's income in the past year was unusually high or low. Income quintile charts are on a different scale to accomodate larger values. The median family in the bottom two quintiles had no retirement savings throughout this period, except for the second quintile in 1998. The median family in the 3d (middle) income quintile had no savings in 1995, 2001 and 2010.
