The impact of the Federal Estate and Gift Tax is often exaggerated. Today’s Snapshot, by Economic Policy Institute economist Max Sawicky, further clarifies the debate on Capitol Hill: Should the estate tax be eliminated? In this second in a two-part series, Sawicky illustrates that if Congress is willing to retain the estate tax, the elimination of the tax for over 75 percent of estates – those under $2.5 million — would preserve 81.7 percent of the current estate tax revenues.
