The hacking of U.S. Treasury payment systems and Office of Personnel Management (OPM) databases by Elon Musk’s team with the so-called Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) is reckless, illegal, and unconstitutional. While we have very different fiscal priorities than the Trump administration, the method for enacting these policy priorities should be the same for everyone: pass a law. DOGE is trying to override the laws passed by Congress by essentially hacking the nation’s checkbook and canceling the spending they don’t like. This is profoundly undemocratic. This is also genuinely dangerous for the well-being of typical families—the cuts DOGE decides to unilaterally impose and the chaos they create will cause real economic pain. No responsible member of civil society—whatever their political party—should tolerate this, and we all have a moral obligation to call this truly authoritarian effort what it is.
