On Thursday, July 10 at 12:00 p.m. Eastern, Economic Policy Institute research associate Sylvia Allegretto and economic analyst David Cooper will hold a media teleconference to discuss the findings of their latest research on the federal subminimum wage for tipped workers, or the “tipped minimum wage.”
The tipped minimum wage is currently $2.13 an hour, and has not been raised since 1991. As a result, a disproportionate number of tipped workers live in poverty. In Twenty Three Years and Still Waiting for Change, Allegretto and Cooper look at aspects of the tipped minimum wage including:
- Demographics and economic conditions of tipped workers
- Tipped employment in states with tipped minimums above the federal wage
- The shifting responsibility for tipped workers’ wages from employers to consumers
