On Tuesday, April 29 at 2:30 p.m. ET, the Economic Policy Institute, the Broader, Bolder Approach to Education, and AASA, the School Superintendents Association, will present the Sundance award-winning documentary “Rich Hill.” Rep. Vicky Hartzler (R-MO), who represents the town of Rich Hill, will introduce the film. Civil rights scholar Peter Edelman (professor, Georgetown Law) will explore how poverty-school intersections impede learning, and Heidi Nel (principal, Picture Motion) will explain plans for the film’s further dissemination and use. A superintendent from a rural district will speak to his schools’ challenges and how they address them.

“Rich Hill” explores the impact of child, family, and concentrated poverty on school and community well-being. The film tracks a year in the lives of three youth and their families in a small Missouri town. Their struggles illustrate the challenges of housing instability, food insecurity, and stresses related to living in poverty that students like them across the country bring to school every day.
