News from EPI Media Advisory: EPI President to join press call on the need for more aid to state and local governments

Tomorrow, Thursday April 9, 2020 at 12:30 p.m. Eastern, EPI President Thea Lee will join a press call providing a timely analysis on the economic impact of state and local budgets amid the coronavirus crisis and outline steps to shore up state and local finances. Lee will join AFSCME President Lee Saunders and SEIU President Mary Kay Henry as they urge Congress to reverse course from years of dangerous austerity cuts and provide adequate funding in a fourth stimulus package for states and localities to continue to provide essential services.

To respond to the loss of over 10 million jobs in the last two weeks alone, public service workers are putting in longer hours, including on weekends. Since many states lack the technological infrastructure to telework, a large proportion of these workers are also risking their health and safety to go into work every day.

Who:

  • Thea Lee, President of the Economic Policy Institute
  • Lee Saunders, President of AFSCME
  • Mary Kay Henry, President of SEIU
  • Jason Suggs, Unemployment Claims Center Associate, College Park, Md.
  • Helen Esposito, Unemployment claims processor, Binghamton, N.Y.

What: Media call on the need for more aid for state and local governments and economic relief for workers amid spiking unemployment claims.

When: Thursday, April 9 at 12:30 p.m. Eastern

Where: 877-876-9176, Passcode: UNION
