News from EPI Media Advisory: EPI to Hold Press Call on Tipped Minimum Wage

On Thursday, July 10 at 12:00 p.m. Eastern, Economic Policy Institute research associate Sylvia Allegretto and economic analyst David Cooper will hold a media teleconference to discuss the findings of their latest research on the federal subminimum wage for tipped workers, or the “tipped minimum wage.”

The tipped minimum wage is currently $2.13 an hour, and has not been raised since 1991. As a result, a disproportionate number of tipped workers live in poverty. In Twenty Three Years and Still Waiting for Change, Allegretto and Cooper look at aspects of the tipped minimum wage including:

  • Demographics and economic conditions of tipped workers
  • Tipped employment in states with tipped minimums above the federal wage
  • The shifting responsibility for tipped workers’ wages from employers to consumers

To RSVP and receive an embargoed copy of the paper, email Dan Crawford at dcrawford@epi.org.
