News from EPI Infographic: Why seniors can’t afford higher medical expenses

19.9 million of America’s seniors (48%) are just one bad economic shock away from significant material hardship, including 63.5 percent of elderly blacks and 70.1 percent of elderly Hispanics. For these seniors, and even for those with greater means, Social Security and Medicare are the bedrock of their financial security.  The infographic below shows that an additional 3.5 million seniors would become economically vulnerable if medical out-of-pocket expenses double (under proposed changes to Medicare). This data and more can be found in the new EPI briefing paper, Financial security of elderly Americans at risk: Proposed changes to Social Security and Medicare could make the majority of seniors ‘economically vulnerable.’
