EPI has updated its estimates of the number of workers who would be affected by the Raise the Wage Act, which would raise the minimum wage to $12 by 2020 and index it to median wages thereafter. Due to a programming error, the initial estimates did not correctly account for scheduled changes to state minimum wages in 2019 and 2020. The corrected estimate reflects a slightly smaller federal impact.

Accounting for those changes does not significantly change the overall picture or the demographic profile of workers affected by the federal minimum wage bill. However, it does decrease the estimated number of affected workers and the amount of their increased wages, as some workers previously expected to get a raise under the bill will already have higher wages from the increase in their state minimum wage.

35 million workers—or more than one in four—would receive a wage increase as a result of the legislation, including 19.6 million women and 16.3 million people of color. 89 percent of workers who would get a raise are 20 years old or older, 27.7 percent have children, and 45 percent have at least some college experience.
