On Wednesday, August 24 at 10:00 a.m. Eastern, the Economic Policy Institute and the Broader, Bolder Approach to Education (BBA) will host a discussion on the growing momentum to make development of a key set of skills—sometimes called non-cognitive skills or social and emotional learning—more central to public education. A new paper, Making whole-child education the norm, from EPI research Emma García and BBA National Coordinator Elaine Weiss, will be released the morning of the event.
Recent studies point to promising ways to incorporate non-cognitive skills into the education system. But they also sound warnings regarding both lessons learned from problematic measurement of traditional academic achievement, and the unique challenges of nurturing and assessing non-cognitive skills.
This event brings together researchers and policymakers to discuss the promise and pitfalls of promoting non-cognitive skills and social and emotional learning, and the next steps we can take based on current research and evidence.
