Table 4
Teachers’ motivation and expectations about remaining in teaching: All schools and by share of low-income students
| All | Low-poverty | High-poverty | Gap (high- minus low-poverty school) | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| I would certainly become a teacher (*) | 42.5% | 45.5% | 41.4% | -4.2 |
| I plan to remain in teaching as long as I am able | 40.8% | 40.7% | 41.8% | 1.1 |
| I definitely plan to leave as soon as I can | 1.9% | 1.4% | 2.1% | 0.7 |

Note: data are for teachers in public noncharter schools in the SASS 2011–2012 (*) and NTPS 2015–16.
Teachers (SASS 2011–2012) are asked about “If you could go back to your college days and start over again, would you become a teacher or not?” and the answer is I Certainly would become a teacher versus others. For the other variables (NTPS 2015-16), teachers are asked how long they plan to remain in teaching. Each variable indicates the share of teachers who chose that response versus all the other available.
