Job growth strong in December as wage growth slows
Below, EPI economists offer their initial insights on the jobs report released this morning, which showed 223,000 jobs added in December and wage growth slowing.

Notable gains in the payroll survey for December were in education+health and leisure+hospitality, rising 67k over the month. Important for policy makers: wage growth decelerated in December no matter how it’s measured. Annualized wage growth between November and December was 3.4%. It is decidedly not driving inflation. pic.twitter.com/40X2c5s9fy

After some recent signs of weakness, the household survey is showing promise with rising participation and employment in December. State and local governments added just 2,000 in December and have added back just 70% of what they lost in the recession. They are still down 452,000 jobs since Feb ’20, with over half of that, 239,000, in education. THIS IS A CRISIS, BUT IT DOESN’T HAVE TO BE. 4/
