Position: Web Developer
Reports to: Communications Director
Position Location: Washington, DC
Pay range: $90K to $120K (Exempt, full time)

The Economic Policy Institute (EPI) is seeking a Web Developer, who is enthusiastic, independent, and collegial and who will be responsible for maintaining the organization’s web properties and transforming those sites to be even more accessible, usable and engaging.

Please note that EPI is a hybrid workplace with attendance in our Washington, DC, office required at least two days per week (currently Tuesday and Wednesday).

The Economic Policy Institute (EPI), the nation’s leading progressive economic think tank, is seeking a talented and motivated web developer to build front-end and back-end features for our websites. EPI has a small and enthusiastic web and design team, and we are looking to expand our capacity with a web developer.

What You Will Do

We are looking for an innovative technical and website expert with a passion for making websites and web products user friendly; and a passion for diversity, equity and inclusion.

Your main responsibility will be to work closely with the creative team to build innovative, public-facing features and internal workflows, and ensure the website looks good and functions properly.

You will be creating and implementing features in PHP, JavaScript, HTML/SCSS, Vue, and a few libraries like HighCharts. The Institute’s main site is on WordPress, so experience with the WordPress API is needed.

You will work on public-facing projects like feature development, data visualization, interactive charts, and site UX; and also, on internal projects like designing features and workflows to streamline our web-first production process for publications, data, and charts.

The first year of your work will be focused on working with an outside website consulting firm to produce a data-heavy dashboard. It will be an interactive and user-friendly dashboard that facilitates easy navigation and outputs data in both machine-readable text and visually compelling formats such as charts, tables, and graphs, for various applications.

Who You Are

We do not expect that every candidate will have this full range of experience, but the following qualities and experience are highly desirable:

Proficiency in:

  • Creating interactive features and data visualizations in JS
  • Creating custom functionality for WordPress—using code, not (just) plugins
  • Working with Git/GitHub
  • Doing basic server management
  • Writing smart, readable, well-documented code
  • Using APIs for social, analytics, and other services
  • Working with designers and a creative team to turn designs into code
  • Keeping up with web trends
  • Managing multiple projects and priorities
  • Staying organized using a project management system
  • Excellent collaboration skills – proven ability to work with non-tech savvy individuals to effectively troubleshoot website issues
  • Passion for taking on new challenges.

Preferred:

  • 5 to 10 years of web development experience.
  • A passion for social and economic justice issues.
  • Experience working for a mid to large scale nonprofit, with high website traffic.
  • Experience working on a large-scale site redesign from inception to realization, including managing timelines, working with stakeholders, and handling QA/QC.
  • Experience managing large-scale projects.

Location

This position is based at the Economic Policy Institute in Washington, D.C. As a condition of employment, EPI requires all staff to provide proof of COVID-19 vaccination which meets the guidelines recommended by the CDC. Currently, the CDC recommends that everyone ages five years and older receive 1 dose of updated (2023–2024 Formula) mRNA COVID-19 vaccine
