The Economic Policy Institute will host four prominent labor economists for a forum on long-term unemployment Wednesday, May 26. The forum, Long-term Unemployment: Causes, Consequences and Solutions, will examine the magnitude of the problem of long-term unemployment and the consequences of policy inaction.
Nearly 46% of unemployed workers have been jobless for at least six months, representing the highest long-term unemployment rate in at least six decades. Those workers face dim employment prospects, with over five unemployed workers competing for every available job. Furthermore, the unemployment insurance extension that Congress passed in April will expire in June unless Congress renews it.
