This year marks the Economic Policy Institute’s 25th year of championing American workers and their families. We hope you can join EPI for a special evening in Washington, D.C., at the Renaissance Mayflower Hotel to celebrate 25 years of hard-won successes on behalf of working families and gear up for the challenges ahead.

On this occasion, we will honor Ray Marshall (pictured, top) and Paul Krugman (bottom), two of the most important individuals that have helped advance EPI’s goal of shared prosperity for all. Marshall is one of EPI’s original founders and a current Distinguished Fellow. He also served as the Secretary of Labor under President Jimmy Carter. Krugman is one of the nation’s pre-eminent economists, 2008 recipient of the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economics, and op-ed columnist for the New York Times. In his weekly column, Mr. Krugman provides incisive analysis on the economic and fiscal realities of the day.

Another highlight of the dinner will be a tribute to leaders of Wisconsin’s labor community. Representatives of this movement will be on hand to receive recognition for their fight to preserve public employee rights in their state, turn back a reactionary budget and repel an attack on the middle class. This will be a night to celebrate their efforts.

In the current political and economic climate, the need for EPI’s expertise is greater than ever. The 25th Anniversary event will kick off our next 25 years and reaffirm our commitment to developing and promoting responsible policies that strengthen the economy and improve the lives of working families. We hope you can join us for this night of celebration.

EPI believes every working family deserves a better future, a good job, affordable health care, and fair pay

Our mission is to achieve shared prosperity by raising the economic status of low- and middle-income Americans. To this end, we work to reshape the way policymakers think about the economy and persuade them to adopt policies that are good for working Americans.

WE BELIEVE IN:

FIGHTING FOR WORKING FAMILIES
We expose inequalities, champion bold solutions, and push progressive economic issues to the forefront of the national agenda.

BROADLY SHARED PROSPERITY
EPI’s efforts focus on growing the economy for the benefit of all Americans, not just the already wealthy.

ACCURACY
Our research is reliable and rigorous, so that we can tell the story of working Americans and counter much of the misinformation in the discourse on the economy.

PROGRESSIVISM
Government must play an active role in protecting the economically vulnerable, ensuring equal opportunity, and improving the well-being of all Americans.

MAKING A DIFFERENCE FOR AMERICA

No working family should have to choose between medicine and a meal. That’s why EPI leverages its expertise—and credibility —to deliver real change for all Americans. We provide:

GROUNDBREAKING RESEARCH AND ANALYSIS
Our cutting-edge, original research spans a broad range of economic issues. EPI analyses are the gold standard in the field —a trusted resource for policymakers and a network of progressive interests and advocacy groups to help further their important agendas.

WORLD-CLASS EXPERTISE
Our team includes the best minds in economics and other disciplines. Our broad network of researchers and scholars has made EPI the authoritative source on the welfare of working Americans.

VISIONARY SOLUTIONS
We are recognized as national leaders on breakthrough liberal economic policies. Our research-based, innovative economic agenda aims to advance the interests of low- and middle-income workers while strengthening the overall economy.

PUBLIC POLICY LEADERSHIP
EPI shapes public policy on the federal and state level through compelling research and education initiatives targeting policymakers, the media, and other opinion-leaders. We influence the public debate to ensure that it includes the perspective of working families.

The Economic Policy Institute (EPI) is an independent, nonprofit think tank that researches the impact of economic trends and policies on working people in the United States.

EPI’s research helps policymakers, opinion leaders, advocates, journalists, and the public understand the bread-and-butter issues affecting ordinary Americans.

By identifying trends and tracking them to their policy causes, we provide a roadmap for returning to an America where hard-working low-wage employees make enough to make a living, the middle class is strong and healthy, and workers who help our economy grow share in its benefits. Scholars, state-level think tanks, foundations, unions, and advocacy organizations have used EPI data to successfully fight for numerous worker- and growth-friendly policies and programs. Our work has led to victories including minimum-wage increases, paid sick day legislation, overtime pay provisions, and Social Security benefit protections.

For more about EPI click here.

Who supports EPI’s work?

EPI is a 501(c)(3) corporation. In 2024, a majority of our funding (approximately 78%) came from foundation grants, while another 12% came from labor unions. EPI also receives support from individuals, corporations, and other organizations.

Policy and Economic Analyst – Economic Analysis and Research Network (EARN) at EPI

About the Economic Analysis and Research Network (EARN): EARN is a nationwide network of state-based research, policy, and advocacy organizations advancing an inclusive, worker-centered economy through state and local policy change and rigorous research. We are the progressive economic policy and research infrastructure in the states, conducting research, providing data analysis, and developing and advocating policies that confront the fundamental imbalances in the workplace in order to create an economy that works for all of us, not just the wealthy. A core part of the Economic Policy Institute (EPI), EARN is a growing network of 55 organizations in 43 states and the District of Columbia. The EARN network is coordinated by staff at the Economic Policy Institute and EARN partners.

EARN in the South (EIS), launched in 2017, is an initiative of EARN that seeks to achieve lasting improvements in economic outcomes for working people in the South, while combating racial and gender injustice and reducing inequality. The initiative aims to advance pro-worker economic and racial justice policies throughout the region, through deep cross-state collaboration between EARN members and grassroots organizing and advocacy groups led by, and representing, people of color. EARN currently has partner organizations in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Texas, Virginia and West Virginia.

EPI seeks an experienced, skilled, and self-starting individual to join our EARN team as a Policy and Economic Analyst to advance EARN’s programs and policy campaigns within our EARN in the South project. This person will conduct research and write reports, blog posts, and other analyses; analyze state, local, regional, and national economic data; and provide research and policy guidance, customized data products, trainings, and technical assistance to EARN state partners and their grassroots allies throughout the U.S. South.

We are seeking someone with five (5) or more years’ experience writing, researching, and using data to analyze public policy and the economy – particularly around economic, worker, racial, and gender justice issues. Experience working in the South and an understanding of how the region’s history of racial oppression and white supremacy continue to influence the political economy of the region is highly desired.

This position will be based either at EPI’s office in Washington, DC, or in the South U.S Census region – with the analyst working from home or at the offices of one of our EARN in the South partners. There will be occasional travel within the region (public health conditions permitting) and to EPI’s offices in Washington, DC. EPI staff are currently working remotely due to the coronavirus pandemic and will resume in-person work when it is safe to do so.

This is a grant-funded, 3-year position, with the possibility of extension contingent on funding.

What You Will Do

Conduct research and analysis in support of EARN in the South projects and campaigns:

Produce reports, fact sheets, op-eds, blog posts, resource packets, and other documents on a wide range of economic issues and policies, but with particular focus on the challenges facing Southern workers—particularly Black, Brown, and women workers—and policy solutions that raise labor standards and build worker power. Other areas of focus could include issues such as minimum wages, paid leave, and other policies to improve job quality; gender- and racial-pay inequities; mass incarceration; equitable economic development; public sector investment; and climate justice.

Collect and analyze data to describe the impact of public policies on working families and the economy.

Develop and maintain state- and regional-level data packages and tools for EARN state groups and grassroots allies.

Produce memos, charts, and other materials analyzing the regional economy to support labor and community representatives on regional Federal Reserve Bank boards of directors.

Support EARN state partners in their research and policy work:
