Whether it’s fair pay, discrimination, or sexual harassment, forced arbitration bars workers’ access to the courts, and class and collective action waivers make it impossible for people to exercise their right to seek justice collectively—undermining the National Labor Relations Act and further eroding workers’ rights and freedoms.

This week’s decision by the U.S. Supreme Court―siding with businesses and the Trump administration over working people―deals a significant blow to workers’ fundamental right to join together to address workplace disputes.

Congress must act to restore this fundamental right by banning forced arbitration agreements and class and collective action waivers.

Sign the petition demanding Congress act immediately to protect the rights of over 60 million U.S. workers who are being forced to sign away their rights to join together to seek justice in the courts.

To: All Members of Congress

Between 1992 and today, the share of nonunion, private-sector workers subject to forced arbitration has increased from just 8 percent to 54 percent. That means that more than half of nonunion, private-sector workers whose legal rights are violated by their employer are not able to pursue a claim in court. This flies in the face of over 80 years of established law ensured by the National Labor Relations Act, which has guaranteed workers’ rights to stand together for “mutual aid and protection” when seeking to improve their wages and working conditions. We demand Congress act immediately to ban forced arbitration agreements and class and collective action waivers, which bar working people from joining together to seek justice in the court.

Since DACA was implemented in June 2012, nearly 800,000 DREAMers have utilized these new legal protections to attend universities, work, and live without fear of being ripped apart from their families.

Bringing DACA recipients into the formal labor market has raised the wages of hundreds of thousands of workers, resulting in new contributions to public coffers, including Social Security and Medicare, and federal, state and local governments.

President Trump’s ill-advised decision to end DACA last September, without a permanent solution from Congress, has turned the DACA debate into an urgent priority.

Sign the petition demanding Congress pass a clean DREAM Act that immediately protects current DACA recipients and all DREAMers who were brought to the United States as children. Don’t let DREAMers be used as bargaining chips to ram through Trump’s draconian immigration agenda.

To: All Members of Congress

DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) is an unmitigated success, allowing hundreds of thousands of DREAMers to attend universities, work, and live without fear of being ripped apart from their families. The president’s ill-advised decision to end DACA has turned this debate into an urgent priority. And the White House’s recent one-page memo of demands, if passed, will keep immigrants in fear and negatively impact the labor market. We call on Congress to pass a clean DREAM Act that protects current DACA recipients and all DREAMers who were brought to the United States as children, and that does not threaten family unity.

Sign Now: Demand a public and accountable investment in infrastructure that fully funds the needs of U.S. communities.

Most public investments in infrastructure―building roads, bridges, transportation systems, water and sewer systems―are funded by federal, state and local governments and their construction and maintenance are overseen by democratically accountable governments. Research shows that public investments accelerate productivity growth, providing the potential for pay increases for working people.

But Donald Trump’s apparent approach to infrastructure investment is to make a token federal commitment, put a heavier burden on already-stretched state governments and invite private developers in to receive subsidies. Worse, the Trump administration has already announced one specific plank of their infrastructure plan: under-funding the Highway Trust Fund by $140 billion over the next decade. The result is likely to be very little boost to actual infrastructure investment, further pressure on state governments and the opportunity for private-sector profiteering.

Stand with EPI and demand a public infrastructure commitment that invests in our communities at scale and doesn’t just provide subsidies to private developers.

To: All Members of Congress

A federal infrastructure plan should prioritize services to the public that are available to all of us as basic rights―such as safe drinking water. Early versions of Donald Trump’s infrastructure plan instead proposed public-private infrastructure partnerships that would provide no efficiency gains, and would open up many avenues of crony capitalism, corruption and rampant inequality of public investments across communities. Recently-leaked plans detailing the Trump approach are little better, kicking responsibility for infrastructure investment to states and providing loan guarantees to private developers. We call on Congress to make a real investment in public infrastructure, not abdicate federal responsibility for financing while handing ownership of these investments to private investors.

Last year, the Department of Labor updated the overtime pay rule to extend overtime eligibility to 4.9 million more working people, and strengthen the rights of 7.6 million more. This August, a Texas district court ruled in favor of business interests, over working people, effectively blocking the rule.

At a time of massive income inequality, strengthening overtime protections for low- and middle-income families is one of the most important actions we can take.

Sign the petition to the Department of Labor demanding it defend the overtime pay of millions of working people and commit to the Obama-era overtime salary threshold of at least $47,476 and indexing the threshold so that it maintains its value for millions of working people.

To: Department of Labor

Back in 1975, President Gerald Ford’s Labor Department set the salary level for overtime exemption at well over $50,000 in today’s dollars―high enough to cover more than 60 percent of full-time salaried workers. Today, that salary threshold is just $23,660, covering less than 7 percent of full-time salaried workers.

We call on the Department of Labor to defend overtime pay for 12.5 million working people and committing to an overtime salary threshold of at least $47,476―high enough to cover about one-third of full-time salaried employees but lower than the level that it was in the 1970s. This will extend overtime eligibility to 4.9 million more working people, and strengthen the rights of 7.6 million more.

Donald Trump and Republicans in Congress may be preparing to revoke a suite of Obama-era executive orders that have provided basic protections for U.S. workers.

The executive orders implemented by the previous administration were important steps to:

Provide paid sick leave for federal contractors

Limit gender and race wage discrimination by increasing pay transparency

Boost wage growth by requiring a minimum wage of $10.20 for federal contractors—lower than what is needed but higher than the current federal minimum wage of $7.25

Safeguard federal contract workers from being forced into unfair internal arbitration systems that make it harder to fight back against discrimination, wage theft, and other violations of worker rights

Require transparency from contractors about violations of labor laws and ensure that federal dollars don’t reward unscrupulous employers

Approximately 25 percent of the U.S. workforce is employed by companies that do business with the federal government, representing $500 billion of business each year on contracts for goods and services.

The Obama-era executive orders hardly constitute a radical agenda. Instead, it is the highly anticipated actions by President Trump and the GOP controlled Congress that signal something radical—a radical assault on the workers candidate Trump claimed to support.

Stand with the Economic Policy Institute today. Sign the petition demanding that President Donald Trump and Congress really support working people.

To: President Donald Trump

If you are serious about supporting working people, you would advance an agenda designed to promote a fair economy, not revoke executive orders that have improved the wages and working conditions of millions of working people. We demand that you not gut rules that support good jobs and workers’ rights. We demand that you not eliminate paid sick leave for over one million federal contract workers. We demand that you immediately abandon your radical assault on working people.

Donald Trump’s selection for labor secretary—fast-food CEO Andrew Puzder—has a long history of anti-worker and anti-government rhetoric and fails every test for labor secretary.

Puzder has made his fortune on the backs of low-wage workers.

He doesn’t believe in the federal minimum wage and has threatened to replace his fast-food chain’s employees with robots if the minimum wage rises high enough.

He is opposed to the new overtime rule that would give millions of workers the right to reasonable work hours or to receive the overtime pay they deserve.

His fast-food chain has a long history of wage theft—cheating workers until it gets caught by state or federal investigators or gets sued by employees.

Stand with the EPI Policy Center and oppose Andrew Puzder for secretary of labor.

To: All United States senators

Donald Trump’s nominee for labor secretary, Andrew Puzder, has a long history of anti-worker and anti-government rhetoric. His personal opposition to the federal minimum wage and the new overtime rule, and his fast-food chain’s record of wage theft from employees, makes him the wrong choice to uphold our nation’s labor laws. We urge you to reject Andrew Puzder as labor secretary.

Rep. Sam Johnson—Chairman of the House Social Security Subcommittee—has introduced a bill that would cut most Social Security recipients’ benefits by an average of 27 percent. Some long-lived recipients would lose up to three-quarters of their benefits.

Johnson’s bill includes an assortment of benefit cuts including raising the retirement age to 69 (equivalent to a 13.5 percent across-the-board cut), changing the benefit formula (9 percent average cut), and slashing the cost-of-living adjustment (13 percent average cut).

Sign the petition today opposing Chairman Sam Johnson’s “Social Security Reform Act,” which cuts benefits for 70 percent of Social Security recipients.

To: Congress

The American people are facing an unprecedented retirement crisis. Instead of cutting Social Security benefits for millions of recipients, we should be expanding them. Please oppose Rep. Sam Johnson’s “Social Security Reform Act,” which cuts benefits for 70 percent of recipients, eroding Social Security’s promise to current and future generations.
