Going Big: FDR’s Legacy, Biden’s New Deal, and the Struggle to Save Democracy with Robert Kuttner

Date: May 3, 2022

The Economic Policy Institute hosted bestselling author and political journalist Robert Kuttner for a discussion of his new book, Going Big: FDR’s Legacy, Biden’s New Deal, and the Struggle to Save Democracy.

The 2022 midterm election season is approaching, and the American political system is in crisis, Kuttner warns. President Biden faces multiple challenges, with parallels to the challenges Franklin Roosevelt faced. Biden can and must remake American politics, on a scale not seen since the 1930s.

As Kuttner writes, “Joe Biden’s presidency will be either a historic pivot back to New Deal economics and forward to energized democracy, or a heartbreaking interregnum between two bouts of deepening American fascism. We are facing the most momentous threat to the American republic since the Civil War.”
