This month, voters in Missouri rejected new “right-to-work” legislation which would have cut wages and benefits of working people.

Now, Congress has a chance to do the same by passing the Workers’ Freedom to Negotiate Act, which would streamline union elections, crack down on employers who illegally deter employees from unionizing, strengthen workers’ right to strike, prevent taxpayer dollars from supporting firms that violate workers’ rights, and importantly ban class action waivers as a condition of employment.

EPI research shows that strong unions improve the wages and working conditions of all working people―union and non-union alike. And that attacks on organized labor and the steady decline in unionization nationally has correlated with flat wages and decreased benefits.

For nearly 40 years, workers’ wages have been flat, correlating with a steady decline in unionization across the country. In order to raise the wages of all working people―union and non-union alike―we call on Congress to pass the Workers’ Freedom to Negotiate Act which strengthens workers’ right to collectively bargain and updates the National Labor Relations Act, returning power to working people, not corporate interests.
