Manufacturing plays a number of key roles in the economy. It often offers good wages and excellent benefits to workers, particularly those with less than a college degree and minorities; it employs more than twice as many scientists and engineers, as a share of employment, as does the rest of the economy; and it is responsible for about two-thirds of private-sector research and development. EPI research tracks the effects of trade and globalization trends, particularly unfair trade agreements and practices, on this vital sector of the American economy.
