Poverty: official rate understates level and trend

 An alternative, more comprehensive measure of poverty reveals shortcomings in the official poverty rate measurements used by the US government.  In today’s Snapshot, senior economist Jared Bernstein compares the two measures and illustrates how the alternative measure, which incorporates recommendations of the National Academy of Sciences, shows higher and faster growing poverty rates.
