Addressing long-term unemployment

Extending unemployment compensation as part of the economic stimulus plan would help the economy and relieve the worst suffering caused by an economic downturn, according to today’s Snapshot by EPI economic analysts Liana Fox and Michael Ettlinger. The long-term unemployed, who numbered 1.2 million in 2007, are considered an excellent target for stimulus spending since they will likely spend their benefits quickly. This analysis shows the long-term unemployment rates in each state, plus the District of Columbia.
